On wednesday 25 April, Thijs Porck has organised a Beowulf Film Night. For more information, see the announcement below.


Dear all,

Over the years, the Old English poem Beowulf has not only captured the hearts and minds of students like yourselves, it has also inspired several movie and television producers. With no less than ten professional film adaptations, Beowulf is one of the most cinematised works of English literature.

On the 25th of April, an ancient Leiden University tradition will be revived: the Beowulf film night. In a brief lecture entitled ‘The Various Faces of the Grendelkin in Beowulf movies’, you will be presented with an overview of the ten film adaptations. Afterwards, we will watch one Beowulf film (to be decided on by democratic vote).

So, if you want to know how Beowulf found its way into a Startrek episode, how an animated Beowulf tried to fight a naked Angelina Jolie, how Gerald Butler (from 300) defeated a rather hairy Grendel or how Christopher Lambert (from Highlander) played Beowulf in a “a post-apocalyptic, techno-feudal future”, then please join us on Wednesday the 25th of April in Lipsius/228 from 19:00 to 22:00.

Studenten Franse Taal en Cultuur aan de Universiteit Leiden hebben woedend gereageerd op de plannen van de Universiteit deze studie op te heffen om te gaan fuseren met Duits en Italiaans. “Een nieuwe meertalige bachelor is prima, maar het afschaffen van de aparte bachelors Frans, Duits en Italiaans leidt tot een totale verschraling van de talenkennis.”, aldus Camille Clerx, student-lid van de Opleidingscommissie Frans. Komende woensdag voeren de studenten actie: een protestmars naar het kantoor van de rector magnificus aan het Rapenburg. “ We hopen natuurlijk dat hij dan naar onze argumenten wil luisteren” , zegt Camille, “ maar anders zullen er nog meer acties volgen.”
Veel studenten begrijpen de opheffing van de opleiding niet. “De studie staat zowel nationaal alsinternationaal heel goed aangeschreven, is winstgevend en trekt elk jaar een stabiel aantal nieuwestudenten. Vakken worden nu vanaf dag één in het Frans gegeven. Dat zal in de nieuwe studie niet meer kunnen. Een ernstige daling van het taalvaardigheidniveau dus”, aldus Camille. “Een groot aantal van ons staat straks voor de klas. En hoe kunnen wij nou Frans goed blijven doceren als, door vermindering van het aantal vakgerichte uren, ons niveau achteruit gaat?” Naast inhoudelijke argumenten voor het behoud van de zelfstandige studie, wijst Camille op de werkwijze van de Universiteit in deze plannen: “Zowel wij als onze docenten zijn voor een voldongen feit geplaatst, terwijl niemand ons goede argumenten kan geven voor de opheffing. Daarbij is er ook niet overlegd met de direct betrokkenen en zijn veel studenten nog steeds niet op de hoogte van de consequenties die dat voor hen zal hebben. “Zulke veranderingen, zonder met studenten en docenten te praten, dat kan niet, dat is echt belachelijk!”, aldus Camille Clerx.

 

Woensdag 29 Februari wordt er een protestmars gehouden naar het kantoor van de rector magnificus aan het Rapenburg. Vind je het net als wij belachelijk dat ze deze studie willen afschaffen en het willen samenvoegen met Duits en Italiaans? Kom dan woensdag om 11:00 naar Rapenburg 70 en protesteer mee! Voor hetzelfde geldt had het de studie Engels kunnen zijn. Neem spandoeken of Franse vlaggen mee, verf je gezicht rood/wit/blauw, doe er alles aan om aandacht te trekken;)

A year ago we promised you we would never forget you, and we didn’t.
I don’t think we could either, because you really did leave a lasting impression during your short time with us.
I looked up to you for your optimism and motivation and all of us knew you’d have a bright future ahead of you, however cheesy this may sound.
I cannot call you a close friend of mine, and I regret that. I wish I had made more of an effort to get to know you better.
You were someone I could see myself becoming good friends with, but I always assumed there’d still be so much time for that. How wrong I was.
Many things don’t seem relevant after someone as young and full of life as you loses their life. How dare I complain about the weather, when you will never feel the snow under your feet again?
It is impossible to make sense of something like this, but I try to let this remind me to live life to the fullest, as it is so precious and easily lost.
I miss you, and I’m glad to have met you.

Anne was a lively and fun girl that always lit up the room with her presence.
